Lacy - Haircuts For Youth

“Volunteering is always great. But a haircut is something unique I can offer that you don’t see offered very much.”

Motivated by a love of working with youth, Lacy Telles came to New Door Ventures to extend her skills as a hairstylist into helping New Door fulfill its mission of assisting San Francisco youth move beyond difficult life circumstances and grow into mature, responsible young adults.

Lacy first heard about New Door through her local church, and decided to become involved because of New Door’s approach to mentoring young people at such a crucial stage of their lives. New Door’s program appealed to her because it provides actual jobs and job training and helps youth gain crucial life skills.

Despite a fluttering of nerves on her way to New Door, wondering whether she would be “cool” or approachable enough for the youth, Lacy was quickly welcomed into the supportive, friendly atmosphere of New Door’s youth space. Although hairstyling is not a traditional volunteer position, hers is a valuable contribution. Her gift of quality haircuts help interns look professional and feel confident for what is often a first-job experience. Plus, Lacy herself is a self-made professional and a good role model for the youth.

“Everyone that I’ve encountered has been awesome, and all of the staff has been incredible. Everyone just seems to have a good heart and is very giving and loving. I really have had a good experience, it’s been great,” comments Lacy. Because hairstyling is an easy, fun way for her to be involved and she loves spending time with the youth interns, Lacy hopes to make this an ongoing gift by which she helps New Door touch lives and prepare youth to become the next generation of self-made professionals.
